“The review found that Micron’s products have serious network security risks, which pose significant security risks to China’s critical information infrastructure supply chain, affecting China’s national security.”-Cyberspace Administration of China (CAC)

The People’s Republic of China (PRC, aka communist China) is now banning the use of Micron Technology’s (Micron) products in “critical information infrastructure” items sold/used in the PRC!  They claim Micron “failed” a national security test.

Supposedly, 10% of Idaho based Micron’s global profits come from sales in China.  However, PRC officials say most of the Micron sales went to other foreign companies operating inside the PRC.  CAC administrators did not give specifics about Micron failed its network security review.

On 16MAY2023, Vision of China (VoC) reported that U.S. chip makers, including Micron, were in trouble and needed the Chinese market to stay alive:

Two weeks ago, Digitimes Asia speculated that a Micron ban in the PRC would be first felt in server Solid State Drives (SSD) sales.

March 2018: MOUNTAIN HOME AFB, IDAHO, UPDATE

Economic Recovery? Japan’s Elpida gets owned by Idaho’s Micron! Take over of Taiwan’s Rexchip in the works. Expect higher prices for your gadgets!

“Under the proposed arrangement with Powerchip, if Micron entered into an agreement to acquire Elpida, Micron would have the right to purchase the Rexchip shares held by Powerchip.”-Dan Francisco, Micron Technology

03 July 2012, failed Japanese microchip maker, Elpida Memory, has agreed to become a subsidiary of Idaho’s Micron Technology.  Of course, the U.S. main stream media says it’ll be good for the U.S. economy.

Elpida was a major supplier to Apple.

The major move makes Idaho’s Micron one of three chip makers who’ll dominate 90% of the World’s memory chip market!  The other two are Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix.

In recent years the memory chip market got flooded with so many chips that the bottom fell out, and even Micron was adversely affected (once the biggest employer in the Boise, Idaho, not anymore).

The result was a dog eat dog situation between international chip makers.  In 2007, Pocatello, Idaho’s AMI Semiconductor (not necessarily memory chips, but the same thing happened with this industry) was taken over by Arizona based ON Semiconductor.  Following that ON went on to take over dozens of other companies right on up to February 2011.

“The DRAM industry is heading towards an oligopolistic market. The emergence of three major DRAM players will help DRAM chip prices gradually stabilize, bidding farewell to the price-slashing competition of the past.”-Trendforce, Taiwanese technology research company

So when market prices drop too low, when there are just too many chip makers out there, the only recourse is for companies to merge or be taken over. The result will reduce the amount of competition, and soon memory chip prices will rise making our high tech gadgets more expensive (of course people will lose their jobs as well).

Micron is also in the final stages of taking over Taiwan based Rexchip Electronics. The approval of the sale is conditional upon Micron’s take over of Elpida.  A company called Powerchip is selling its controling shares of Rexchip to Micron.  Already the price of Rexchip stocks has jumped 58% since 29 June!

“The deal will reduce price volatility as Micron will have tighter control over capacity expansion and investment plans as it needs to integrate Elpida and Rexchip.”-Song Myung-sub, HI Investment & Securities

The amazing thing about Micron’s take overs is that Micron has lost billions of dollars in the past couple of years. So where’d they get the money to initiate these take over moves?

What Economic Recovery? Idaho’s Micron loses big time, again. Many Idahoans still think Micron is Idaho’s major employer

Computer chip maker Micron reported another quarterly loss;  U.S.$187 million! This follows a $135 million loss the previous quarter.

It was hoped the end of a lawsuit, in Micron’s favor, would be a sign of better times to come, but not so.

A west Idaho newspaper reported that many Idahoans think of Micron as the Boise’s biggest private employer. Back in October I posted how real estate web sites, and even Wikipedia, incorrectly report Micron as the biggest employer in Boise.

With Micron’s continued loses it’s possible that they now employ less than the 5,000 people reported at the end of 2009.

End of Lawsuit may re-invigorate Idaho’s Micron, gets big boost from George Soros, rumors of insider trading

Finally, after more than a year (the last 8 weeks in deliberations), a California jury has decided in Micron’s favor, ending the possibility of Micron having to pay $11.9 billion in restitution.

A California company was suing Idaho’s Micron, along with a South Korean company, claiming they worked together (colluded) to fix computer chip prices, and to interfere with the California company’s ties with Intel.

Since 2009 Micron has fallen from being Idaho’s top employer, after laying off thousands of employees. If they had lost the lawsuit it would have been their death blow.

Even before the verdict the value of Micron stock started going up (possibly due to George Soros).  Bloomberg News reported that Micron stocks are making “unusual moves” upward.

A big reason Micron stock is going up is that billionaire investor, George Soros, recently bought up 484.5 million senior convertible Micron Technology securities, valued at $$477.6 million!  Maybe a positive turnaround for Idaho’s Micron is finally in the works?

Here’s the problem: George Soros started buying up Micron stock days before the California jury made their decision.  This is now starting rumors of insider trading.  But it’ll be tough to prove, after all, how could anyone know what a jury is going to decide, right?  Oh well, it’s happened before.

Incompetence or Conspiracy? Idaho Real Estate web sites, and even Wikipedia, list Micron as the biggest employer in Boise

The computer chip maker Micron Technology is in big trouble, and since 2009 isn’t even the second biggest employer in Boise, Idaho.  Yet, Idaho real estate agent web sites, which encourage out’a staters to move to Idaho, continue to list Micron as the top employer.  Other web sites, and blogs, list the number of Boise Micron employees at 15,000!  Even a check of Wikipedia’s section on Boise still claims that Micron is the top employer.

Micron hasn’t been the top employer ever since 2009, after lay offs cut their Boise work force down to about 5,000.  And that’s according to a September 2011 Idaho Statesman report.  Also, the Idaho Statesman says Micron’s peak Boise employment of about 15,000 happened a decade ago!

To make matters worse, Micron is losing money.  They lost $135 million in the third quarter of this year.  On top of that they’re about to get hit with a court judgment for price fixing.  That judgement could be as high as $11.9 billion.

Micron recently told investors that such a fine would further degrade future operations, and, they admitted they don’t even have any money to pay such a fine!

So why are Idaho real estate companies, web media sites, bloggers, and even Wikipedia still promoting Micron as the top employer in Boise?  Conspiracy, or incompetence?

What Economic Recovery? Idaho chip maker, Micron, in trouble

September 29, Boise based Micron reports losing money for the first time since 2009.  For the quarter ending September 1, Micron lost U.S.$135 million.

That’s a big drop compared to the previous quarter when the Idaho memory chip maker (they also make computers) reported a $75 million profit!

The loss is being blamed on a drop in chip prices, and a drop in sales.

Things got so bad in 2009, that Micron laid off more than half it’s Idaho work force! It has not recovered.

To make matters worse, Micron is facing a court case in which a California competitor claims Micron colluded with a South Korean company to price fix certain types of memory chips.  If they lose the case Micron could be hit with a $11.9 billion fine!

What Economic Recovery? Idaho Micron says demand for computer chips anemic

Idaho based Micron is reporting a drop in demand for computer chips.  One semiconductor analyst calls it “anemic”.

Micron reports sales are down, even though profits are up 4%, from the previous quarter.  How did they make a profit?  Officially Micron calls it ‘reduction in manufacturing costs’.  That means workers got laid off, in fact since 2008 more than 2000 Micron employees lost their jobs.

When you compare net revenues, year to year, Micron still lost money.
