Incomplete list of publicly announced layoffs & shutdowns:

Arizona: Copper miner Asarco shutting down Pinal County mining operations, 211 jobs lost by the end of October!  It’s blamed on copper prices crashing by 40% since 2011.

California: Washington based Starbucks is shutting down about 22 “popular” La Boulange bakery stores across The Golden State, in September.  One San Francisco TV news source said many La Boulange employees are rebelling against Starbucks by rejecting job offers to work directly for the evil corporate coffee chain store.   Delivery drivers for Albertsons and Vons grocery stores reporting mass layoffs and work hour cutbacks as a result of the Cerberus owned Albertsons takeover of Safeway: “I have a wife and three kids, and we live on a half acre of horse property in Mira Loma. We just had to sell our three horses and three pigs, next it will be the Harley.”-Jeff Dean, driver who had his hours reduced from full time to part time

Colorado: Texas based EVRAZ Rocky Mountain Steel laid off 12 people at their mill in Pueblo.

Florida: Fuel delivery company Bunkers International now chapter 11 bankrupt busted after Too Big to Jail PNC Bank cut off debt financing (a move known as De-leveraging).

Iowa: Food giant Cargill shutting down its Animal Nutrition customer service and sales office in Coralville blaming crashing sales, 15 to 28 jobs affected.

Kansas: What automotive industry recovery?  Changes being made at GM’s (General Motors) Fairfax Malibu car factory will result in 380 parts suppliers losing their jobs; Inteva Products 180 jobs and  Woodbridge Sequencing Center 2-hundred jobs!

Massachusetts: In Worchester, iconic 32 years old Bicycle Alley shutting down soon, the owner wants to retire and said “This was planned for awhile.” 

New Mexico: Gold and copper miner Freeport McMoRan reducing output at its Tyrone Mine, 210 jobs lost between now and 2016!

New York: Proof of a bad economy and mass exodus from The Empire State, as Westchester County reports a $6-million USD drop in sales tax revenues for the first six months of 2015! In typical failed state flailing county administrators are not only going to deal with it by jacking up taxes, but they’re laying off hundreds of employees!  158 county employees were bribed into voluntarily quitting (buyouts), but administrators warn that if tax revenues continue to crash more employees would be let go!  In Allentown, after ten years outdoor La Tee Da Cafe shutdown, the owners said “…we’re ready to do something else.”   In Ogdensburg, 11 jobs lost suddenly after the eight years old A&W-Long John Silver’s restaurant on Champlain Street shutdown without warning: “The owner said they aren’t making enough to keep things open.”-Josh Hitsman, manager

Ohio: CVS Pharmacy eliminating 232 Ominicare jobs starting at the end of October!  It should be noted that Omnicare got a 2011 tax incentive in exchange for promising to create 630 jobs by 2022.   After 57 seasons taxpayer owned Huntington Playhouse in Bay Village shutting down right after Xmas.

Washington: After 16 years Edmonds Maytag Laundromat shutdown by the greedy property owner of the Salish Crossing: “I could see the writing on the wall and knew these changes were coming, but I really didn’t expect things to move so fast.”-David Kenyon, given 30 days to clear out “…76 washers, dryers and other machines, get customers to pick up their finished jobs…”

Washington DC: Riyad Market forced to shutdown in November by the property owner and the federal Attorney General.  The Obama regime used a 2014 drug bust at the store as the reason.

28 August 2015: Restaurant shuts down with no warning, takes employees’ paychecks.

The U.S. Department of Labor (DoL) no longer issues mass layoff reports: “On March 1, 2013, President Obama ordered into effect the across-the- board spending cuts (commonly referred to as sequestration) required by the Balanced Budget and Emergency Deficit Control Act, as amended. Under the order, the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) must cut its current budget by more than $30 million, 5 percent of the current 2013 appropriation, by September 30, 2013. In order to help achieve these savings and protect core programs, the BLS will eliminate two programs, including Mass Layoff Statistics, and all ‘measuring green jobs’ products. This news release is the final publication of monthly mass layoff survey data.”

In Canada, the Sobeys-Safeway chain announced the elimination of 1-thousand 3-hundred distribution/administration jobs!  The company is building new automated grocery distribution warehouses to replace humans. The layoffs are also part of the ongoing consolidation of Sobeys and Safeway grocery ops, after Sobeys took over the Canadian Safeways in 2013, as well as new consolidation ops after Sobeys-Safeway took over part of grocery co-op Atlantic in June of this year.

In the United States, the chaos created by the Cerberus takeover of Albertsons, Safeway, Vons, Jewel-Osco, Shaw’s, Acme, Tom Thumb, Randalls, United Supermarkets, Pavilions, Star Market and Carrs, is ramping up.

In Oregon, yet more Safeways are being shutdown.  You can’t blame competition or declining customer base because Rockwood city administrators say it’s the fourth grocery store they’ve lost: “It’s a huge hit. If we weren’t a food desert before, we certainly are now!  To lose another Safeway … that’s four major grocery stores out of a community that’s growing in population, not decreasing!”– Josh Fuhrer, Gresham Redevelopment Commission

In connection to the Rockwood Safeway shutdown, reports say students from Portland State University conducted a study and found that the grocery store exodus from Rockwood has made the local Albertsons the most expensive place for food.  Now you know the real reason for grocery store mergers and shutdowns, reduce competition and jack up the prices so the stockholders get a bigger slice of pie.

Then there’s the Gresham Safeway and the Milwaukie Safeway, both shutting down in August.  Spokeswoman Jill McGinnis blamed lack of big profits.

However, in Wyoming Albertsons-Safeway announced their expansion of grocery ops in The Cowboy State is requiring the “need to hire the right people to serve our customers.”  The untrustworthy corporate administrators claim they will hire hundreds of people to “meet our business demands” created by their additions of bakery, butchery and florist ops in Wyoming (you mean they didn’t already have those operations, like they’ve had here in next door Idaho for decades? No wonder a lot of western Wyomingans come to eastern Idaho to grocery shop).

After shutting down or selling off hundreds of stores (see list below), ostensibly to cut costs, the highly edumacated elitist wunderkinds at Albertsons-Safeway told Supermarket News that they are planning to spend money opening hundreds of new stores!  Their plan involves 115 stores, mostly remodeling of existing stores but some being considered ‘replacement’ stores for existing operations.  Here’s what the hypocritical ceo Bob Miller said: “We’re investing in making our stores places where customers want to shop and employees want to work because we know that’s the best way to win in the marketplace.”  (it’s hypocritical because of the thousands of jobs they’ve already destroyed)

But things aren’t good for the Cerberus created Albertsons-Safeway.  United Natural Foods canceling their food supply contract with Albertsons, before the end of September (the contract was good until July 2016)!  Administrators with United Natural Foods indicated that they were actually losing money doing business with Albertsons: “…we believe that this course of action is in the best long-term interests of United Natural Foods as it will now allow us to redirect our resources to pursue our previously announced plans to expand….We plan to utilize the capital freed up from the termination of our Albertsons’ relationship to further pursue our strategic objectives, and we believe this will provide greater value for our shareholders long term.”-Steve Spinner, ceo

And the problems with Haggen have gotten worse.  After announcing they were shutting down stores they bought from Albertsons-Safeway, now Albertsons is actually suing the Washington based grocer.

Albertsons-Safeway says Haggen was supposed to pay for the inventory in the 146 stores it recently took over.  Albertsons-Safeway claims Haggen failed to pay for the inventory in 38 California stores and owes Albertsons-Safeway $41-million USD as a result!

However, Haggen says Albertsons-Safeway violated the terms of the sale of those California stores: “It is unfortunate Albertsons has chosen to file what appears to be nothing more than a strike suit to avoid addressing its wrongful conduct. Haggen will mount a vigorous defense and aggressively prosecute its counterclaims…”-attorneys for Haggen

Arizona, U.S.A.: Peoria Safeway and Claypool Safeway shutdown in June, at least 94 jobs affected. The following grocery stores now Haggen; Anthem Safeway, two Tucson Safeways, Tucson Albertsons, two Scottsdale Albertsons, Flagstaff Albertsons, Prescott Valley Albertsons. In Lake Havasu, three Safeway and seven Albertsons are being switched over to Haggen.

California, U.S.A.: The new Albertsons-Safeway laid off another 21 Safeway employees in June. Two Albertsons-Safeway owned Vons stores shutdown in Fresno, 127 jobs lost! Albertsons-Safeway laid off 129 people from their Pleasanton HQ in April. Albertsons-Safeway laid off another 188 Pleasanton employees in May! Albertsons-Vons shutdown its Riverside La Sierra Plaza Vons and two Bakersfield Vons in May, because they are “not meeting company goals.” Arcadia Vons Pavillions SuperStore shutdown on 18 March 2015, at least 168 jobs lost! The 32 years old Hemet Vons shutdown on 28 December 2014, at least 55 jobs lost. Company administrators claimed it had nothing to do with the hostile takeover by Cerberus. Marina Del Ray Albertsons, shutdown by 26 February 2015, at least 80 jobs lost. Pleasanton Safeway HQ laid off at least 26 people in February 2015. In Pleasonton, Safeway laid off an additional 18 HQ employees in March. A San Diego Albertsons shutdown by 26 February 2015, at least 63 jobs lost. Colorado, U.S.A.: Yampa Valley Medical Center has agreed to buy the abandoned Craig Safeway store from city council member Kent Nielson. KKCO reports instant decline in customer traffic for other business at the Monument Valley Shopping Center after the Redland’s Safeway shutdown. Redlands Safeway, Castle Rock Safeway, Thornton Safeway, Westminster Safeway, three Aurora Safeways, Littleton Safeway, Denver Safeway and Centennial Safeway, hundreds of jobs lost by June! Colorado Springs Albertsons shutdown in March. Cerberus administrators say it has nothing to do with their takeover of Safeway-Vons: “That store basically has not been profitable for quite some time, despite the best efforts of our company and associates there and the location…..That’s why we’re closing it.”

Florida, U.S.A.: Albertsons issued a WARN saying they will shutdown their Clearwater store in May, 86 jobs lost.

Hawaii, U.S.A.: Drugs pusher Walgreens canceled plans to open a pharmacy in the Kauai Safeway: “As part of this process, Walgreens did a comprehensive financial reassessment of its plans to open a new store in Lihue on Kauai, and have concluded that it is not in the company’s best interests to move forward with opening a store in that location.”

Illinois: The Jewel-Osco HQ in Itasca was sold for $23.7-million. A local news report implied it was the result of the hostile takeover of Safeway by Albertsons.

Montana: In Missoula, two Safeways sold to Orange Street Food Farms-Fresh Market. Recent news reports said that one is being torn down for the Providence-Saint Patrick’s Medical Center, despite all previous reports saying both former Safeways were now Fresh Markets.

Nevada, U.S.A.: The following grocery stores now Haggen; Boulder City Vons, three Henderson Albertsons (don’t be surprised if at least one is closed), three Las Vegas Vons (don’t be surprised if at least one is closed).

Oregon, U.S.A.: The Gresham, Milwaukie and Rockwod Safeways shutting down by the end of August.  Beaverton Albertsons shutdown on 20 June, 68 jobs affected. In Lake Oswego, Albertsons taken over by Haggen. Cerberus administrators made the exact same claim as in their Colorado Springs shutdown saying “The store has not been profitable for quite some time.” This is interesting because according to local news reports there are only two grocery stores in the city! In Lake Grove, the Albertsons being switch over to Haggen. Safeway shutting down their Clackamas regional office, 91 jobs lost by March. Safeway in Ashland, two in Klamath Falls and one in Springfield to become Haggen. Albertsons in Baker, Beaver, two in Bend, one in Clackamas, two in Eugene and in Grants Pass, one in Keizer, Milwaukee, Sherwood, West Linn and two in Tigard.

Pennsylvania: The last Safeway owned Genuardi’s grocery store shutdown, 40 jobs lost.

Texas, U.S.A.: Arlington Tom Thumbs shutting down in June, at least 45 jobs affected. In East Dallas, an Albertsons was renamed Minyard Sun Fresh Market. Reports said the grand opening was delayed due to problems switching over the cash register system. A second East Dallas Alberstons became Minyard Sun Fresh Market on 16 February. Only one of the three East Dallas Albertsons will remain Albertsons. One store manager said the changes are a direct result of the takeover of Safeway. Interestingly I found a report that said Cerberus swore there would be no name changes after the takeover of Safeway, but they failed to explain the sale of 12 stores to RLS Supermarkets (apparently the result of a court order). The Tom Thumb grocery stores in Bedford and Grapevine converting to Minyard Sun Fresh Market.

Washington, U.S.A.: The Merced Island Albertsons being shutdown in July, the pharmacy has already shutdown. The Poulsbo Albertsons shutting down in July, 60 jobs affected. The Safeway in Spokane Valley shutdown in March, 60 jobs lost. Company administrators said it was not due to the takeover by Cerberus controlled Albertsons, but that the lease expired and it wasn’t worth renewing it. In Kirkland, reports that Goodwill thrift store is taking over the now vacant Albertsons store. Haggen took control of the Monroe Albertsons. Safeway becoming Haggen in Gig Harbor and Tacoma beginning in March. Albertsons becoming Haggen in Olympia, Puyallup, Tacoma and Lakewood beginning in March. Albertsons becoming Haggen in Federal Way and Milton by June. Albertsons in Port Angeles, Wenatchee and Shoreline becoming Haggen in February. Albertsons in Redmond, Walla Walla, Snohomish, Silverdale, Burien, becoming Haggen in March. Albertsons in Seattle, another one in Burien, Renton, Bremerton and Milton becoming Haggen in June. Shoreline Safeway becomeing Haggen in February. Safeway in Everett, Renton, Oak Harbor and Port Orchard in March. Liberty Lake Safeway becomes Haggen in June.

Albertsons Safeway update 18 July 2015: Stock issue to result in more store shutdowns?

Analysts are expecting good things for Albertsons-Safeway (owned by New York based Cerberus Capital Management) when the Initial Public Offering (IPO) of stocks are made.   That is they think a lot of ‘investors’ will buy those stocks because investors like what they see is being done with the new grocery chain (meaning shutdowns and layoffs after Albertsons lost $1.2-billion USD in 2014!), but what does it mean for employees of Albertsons, Safeway, Vons, Jewel-Osco, Shaw’s, Acme, Tom Thumb, Randalls, United Supermarkets, Pavilions, Star Market and Carrs?

Analysts describe a couple of scenarios about what Cerberus would do with all the new money they’ll have after the IPO, and both scenarios seem to point to more layoffs.

1: What’s been happening to make the new Albertsons-Safeway ‘more efficient’ (including shutdowns & layoffs) will ramp up.

2: Use the new money to take over even more grocery store chains, but my experience is that the main reason you take over competition is to shut it down.  Over the past several months I’ve read several news reports out of New Jersey, concerning the increasing number of local grocery store shutdowns, and the consensus in that state is that there is too much competition.

By the way, Albertsons is reported to have $12-billion of debt!

Right now Cerberus is the second largest grocery store operator in the U.S.

Number one is Kroger (Baker’s Supermarkets, City Market, Dillons Food Stores, Fry’s Food & Drug, Gerbes Super Markets, Harris Teeter, Jay C, King Soopers, Kroger, Owen’s, Pay Less Super Markets, QFC, Ralphs, Scott’s, Smith’s, Fred Meyer, some Food 4 Less, Foods Co and Ruler Foods, to name a few), and even they’ve been shutting down stores.

You knew if had to be, it always happens when one corporation sells out to another.  After taking over Vons and Albertsons stores new owner Haggen is killing jobs, despite previous announcements to the contrary!

Reports out of California say Haggen has begun laying off an undisclosed number of employees and cutting work hours for the rest, after taking over 83 California grocery stores from the recently created Albertsons-Safeway (a total of 146 Albertsons, Vons, Pavilions and Safeway stores across the country were sold to Haggen as part of the Albertsons Safeway merger).

Executives with Haggen finally admitted they cannot keep prices low with all those employees on the payroll.  Grocery industry analysts say Haggen has bitten off more than it can chew with the purchase of 146 stores: “Clearly they are underperforming. This is a clear sign that their sales expectations are not being met.”– Jim Prevor, PerishablePundit.com

Another analyst said get ready for more changes: “This is the biggest conversion in Southern California or anywhere else in the last 15 to 20 years. It’s going to be evolutionary to go through the transition and correct the pricing and everything else that comes up.”-Burt Flickinger 3rd, Strategic Resource Group

Haggen did admit in a press release that they were eliminating jobs in California, Arizona and Nevada. But would only say that the number of layoffs would “vary by store” and blamed “unprecedented” competition.

Albertsons Safeway shuts down forgotten Island store!

U.S. Food Crisis 10 June 2015: Albertsons Safeway shuts down forgotten Island store! Hospitals take over Safeway stores! Shutdowns negatively affect surrounding stores!

Cerberus controlled and AB Acquisition owned Albertsons-Safeway decided to shutdown another Washington grocery store: “In Mercer Island, we are also unfortunately facing a substantial rent increase that makes it financially unfeasible to remain in the space.”

Local news reports say residents of the island are majorly pissed off because in the recent past they tried to get the city council to allow competing grocery operations to set up shop in their city.  The city council refused!  Albertsons-Safeway claimed that their Mercer Island store was “underperforming”.  A 2008 blog post stated that Mercer Island had a grand total of three grocery stores, and the Albertsons was the worst managed of them all!   The blog post, titled You’ve Got To Be Kidding, said the Albertsons was “hidden” and that “Sometimes I even have trouble finding the food in there.”

In Colorado, KKCO reporting that the recent shutdown of the Redland’s Monument Village Shopping Center Safeway store is drastically reducing customer traffic for the remaining business in the Shopping Center. Chiropractor Ron Engler reports a noticeable decline in customers, so much so that he must now spend money on an aggressive advertising campaign.

Also in Colorado, Yampa Valley Medical Center has signed a contract to buy the abandoned Safeway grocery store. What should be scandalous is that the property is owned by current Craig city council member Kent Nielson.

In Montana, one of two abandoned Safeways mysteriously being torn down to make room for the Providence-Saint Patrick’s Medical Center expansion.  The other Safeway is now a Fresh Market.  The two Safeways were sold off in 2014, as part of the Albertsons merger, after 75 years of serving Missoulans.  Both stores were apparently bought by Orange Street Food Farms-Fresh Market.  News reports, some dated as late as 27 May 2015, said both stores were now Fresh Markets.  The store on Researve Street is a Fresh Market, but according to a news report dated 10 June 2015 the store on Broadway is the one being torn down for the hospital.   I haven’t found any reports explaining what happened to the Fresh Market that was supposed to take over the Broadway Safeway.

Illinois: The Jewel-Osco HQ in Itasca was sold for $23.7-million. A local news report implied it was the result of the hostile takeover of Safeway by Albertsons.

Montana: In Missoula, two Safeways sold to Orange Street Food Farms-Fresh Market.  Recent news reports said that one is being torn down for the Providence-Saint Patrick’s Medical Center, despite all previous reports saying both former Safeways were now Fresh Markets.

Despite the optimism of the new Albertsons-Safeway, they’ve agreed to settle a lawsuit brought by three hedge funds who held stock in Safeway.   The three hedge funds combined will now get an additional $127-million USD for their shares of Safeway!

Cerberus controlled and AB Acquisition owned Albertsons-Safeway blaming an expired lease and a greedy property owner for the shutdown of its Beaverton, Oregon, grocery store.  The 20 years old store is scheduled to shutdown on the 20th.

Albertsons-Safeway administrators claimed “We were caught by surprise” by a rent increase, however, a commercial property analyst called Bull-Shit on that: “They are never caught by surprise! Every big retailer is in the real estate business whether they say so or not!”-Jeff Sackett, Capstone Partners

In Poulsbo, Washington, the Albertsons will shutdown on 05 July because it is “an underperforming store”, according to company administrators.  However, I discovered the real reason for the shutdown is because there is a Safeway just across the street!  60 jobs will be lost.

In Pennsylvania, the last Albertsons-Safeway owned Genuardi’s grocery store shutdown: “We’re the last store that will have the Genuardi banner out there because the lease has expired and the landlord and Safeway agreed to exit the market…..it just happened a little faster than we expected….”– John Vuotto, employee relations

In Henderson, Nevada, a fire damaged a Albertsons-Safeway controlled Vons grocery store.  The store has re-opened.

In Arcata, California, a Safeway was evacuated after people began feeling faint.  Firefighters determined a relief valve for coolant failed and the refrigerant gas leaked into a generator room.

U.S. Food Crisis 27 May 2015: Starving man steals food using tazer! Albertsons Safeway shuts down Tom Thumb stores!

In Eureka, California, a man stealing food used a tazer to rip off a Safeway grocery store.  A store employee tried to stop the food robber when he saw the man leaving without paying for the food. But the man, who was obviously hungry as he didn’t try to steal any cash, pulled a tazer on the store employee.  Later on, law enforcers found and arrested the man on charges of Armed Robbery.

Albertsons-Safeway owned Tom Thumbs grocery store in Arlington, Texas, will be shutdown in June.  The pharmacy is being shuttered by the end of the week.  As with other recent shutdowns, Albertsons-Safeway claims nobody is going to get laid off!

The shutdown comes after Albertsons-Safeway announced plans to build a new Tom Thumbs store as part of a $200-million USD retail project in Dallas.  That’s the real reason for the Arlington shutdown, and the new trend in retail America; if you’re going to build a new store you’ve got to shutdown an old one, or two, or more.  (so the net result of job creation will be zero, or even negative)

The new Albertsons-Safeway announced that two Safeway stores in Arizona will shutdown in June.  Administrators swore to local news media that nobody would be laid off, that somehow they would find jobs for the now redundant employees at other Safeway stores (and then probably use that as an excuse to massively reduce work hours so they don’t have to provide Obama Care insurance).

Arizona, U.S.A.: Peoria Safeway and Claypool Safeway will shutdown in June, at least 94 jobs affected.  The following grocery stores will become Haggen; Anthem Safeway, two Tucson Safeways, Tucson Albertsons, two Scottsdale Albertsons, Flagstaff Albertsons, Prescott Valley Albertsons. In Lake Havasu, three Safeway and seven Albertsons are being switched over to Haggen.

California, U.S.A.: The new Albertsons-Safeway issued more layoff WARNs saying another 21 Safeway employees will be laid off in June. Two Albertsons-Safeway owned Vons stores will shutdown in Fresno, by June, 127 jobs lost! Albertsons-Safeway laid off 129 people from their Pleasanton HQ in April. Albertsons-Safeway issued a WARN saying another 188 layoffs are scheduled for the Pleasanton by the end of May! Albertsons-Vons announced it will shutdown its Riverside La Sierra Plaza Vons and two Bakersfield Vons in May, because they are “not meeting company goals.” Arcadia Vons Pavillions SuperStore shutdown on 18 March 2015, at least 168 jobs lost! The 32 years old Hemet Vons shutdown on 28 December 2014, at least 55 jobs lost. Company administrators claimed it had nothing to do with the hostile takeover by Cerberus. Marina Del Ray Albertsons, shutdown by 26 February 2015, at least 80 jobs lost. Pleasanton Safeway HQ laid off at least 26 people in February 2015. In Pleasonton, Safeway laid off an additional 18 HQ employees in March. A San Diego Albertsons shutdown by 26 February 2015, at least 63 jobs lost. Hawaii, U.S.A.: Drugs pusher Walgreens canceled plans to open a pharmacy in the Kauai Safeway: “As part of this process, Walgreens did a comprehensive financial reassessment of its plans to open a new store in Lihue on Kauai, and have concluded that it is not in the company’s best interests to move forward with opening a store in that location.”

Illinois: The Jewel-Osco HQ in Itasca was sold for $23.7-million. A local news report implied it was the result of the hostile takeover of Safeway by Albertsons.

Nevada, U.S.A.: The following grocery stores will become Haggen; Boulder City Vons, three Henderson Albertsons (don’t be surprised if at least one is closed), three Las Vegas Vons (don’t be surprised if at least one is closed).

Oregon, U.S.A.: In Lake Oswego, Albertsons taken over by Haggen. Cerberus administrators made the exact same claim as in their Colorado Springs shutdown saying “The store has not been profitable for quite some time.” This is interesting because according to local news reports there are only two grocery stores in the city! In Lake Grove, the Albertsons being switch over to Haggen. Safeway shutting down their Clackamas regional office, 91 jobs lost by March. Safeway in Ashland, two in Klamath Falls and one in Springfield to become Haggen. Albertsons in Baker, Beaver, two in Bend, one in Clackamas, two in Eugene and in Grants Pass, one in Keizer, Milwaukee, Sherwood, West Linn and two in Tigard.

Texas, U.S.A.: In East Dallas, an Albertsons was renamed Minyard Sun Fresh Market. Reports said the grand opening was delayed due to problems switching over the cash register system. A second East Dallas Alberstons is expected to make the changeover to Minyard Sun Fresh Market on 16 February. Only one of the three East Dallas Albertsons will remain Albertsons. One store manager said the changes are a direct result of the takeover of Safeway. Interestingly I found a report that said Cerberus swore there would be no name changes after the takeover of Safeway, but they failed to explain the sale of 12 stores to RLS Supermarkets (apparently the result of a court order). The Tom Thumb grocery stores in Bedford and Grapevine converting to Minyard Sun Fresh Market.

Washington, U.S.A.: The Safeway in Spokane Valley shutdown in March, 60 jobs lost. Company administrators said it was not due to the takeover by Cerberus controlled Albertsons, but that the lease expired and it wasn’t worth renewing it. In Kirkland, reports that Goodwill thrift store is taking over the now vacant Albertsons store. Haggen took control of the Monroe Albertsons. Safeway becoming Haggen in Gig Harbor and Tacoma beginning in March. Albertsons becoming Haggen in Olympia, Puyallup, Tacoma and Lakewood beginning in March. Albertsons becoming Haggen in Federal Way and Milton by June. Albertsons in Port Angeles, Wenatchee and Shoreline becoming Haggen in February. Albertsons in Redmond, Walla Walla, Snohomish, Silverdale, Burien, becoming Haggen in March. Albertsons in Seattle, another one in Burien, Renton, Bremerton and Milton becoming Haggen in June. Shoreline Safeway becomeing Haggen in February. Safeway in Everett, Renton, Oak Harbor and Port Orchard in March. Liberty Lake Safeway becomes Haggen in June.

Albertsons Vons Safeway officially sucks according to Consumer Reports!

UnAmerican Cerberus-AB Acquisition now controls Albertsons, Safeway, Vons, Jewel-Osco, Shaw’s, Acme, Tom Thumb, Randalls, United (aka United Supermarket & United Express), Pavilions, Star Market, Market Street, Amigos (aka Amigos United) and Carrs.  But, Consumer Reports doesn’t have good things to say about their fresh food or prices.

Consumer Reports judged 68 supermarkets and eight of them are owned by Cerberus-AB Acquisition.

Out of the 68 grocery stores Tom Thumb ranked 38th, Vons 49th, Albertsons 50th, Randalls 57th,  Safeway 58th, Jewel-Osco 59th, Acme 61st and Shaw’s 64th.  In other words most of Cerberus-AB Acquisition stores suck.

Idaho based employee owned (privately held) WinCo ranked 11th.  Washington based publicly held (traded on NASDAQ) Costco ranked 6th.  The number one grocery store is New York based family owned (privately held) Wegmans.

By the way, Walmart came in 67th out of 68!

Cerberus-AB Acquisition controlled Albertsons-Safeway announced more store shutdowns; two Vons in California and 10 Safeway stores in Colorado!  Administrators claim all 12 stores are not making enough money!

While Cerberus-AB Acquisition has been slashing and burning jobs at their Albertsons-Safeway-Vons stores they’ve been asking their customers to donate food to Nepal! A press release sates that their United Supermarket, Market Street, Amigos, United Express and Albertson’s Market locations, in Texas and New Mexico, are asking customers to donate money, supposedly to help the victims of the earthquake. How about donate money to help the victims of Cerberus-AB Acquisition?

New Jersey based food distributor BeaconUnited-B&G Foods’ has signed a major deal with Albertsons-Safeway.

A maker of eating utensils made from recycled materials, Repurpose, signed a deal with Albertsons, Vons and Pavilions stores in California.

Cerberus-AB Acquisition now controls Albertsons, Safeway, Vons, Jewel-Osco, Shaw’s, Acme, Tom Thumb, Randalls, United (aka United Supermarket & United Express), Pavilions, Star Market, Market Street, Amigos (aka Amigos United) and Carrs.
