In September 2022, the Snake River Brigade’s 116th Cavalry Brigade Combat Team (CBCT) was busy in Texas, where it was transformed into Task Force Rattler, next stop Kuwait and Iraq.

The Army National Guard’s 116th CBCT is based in Idaho, but has units spread through Florida, Montana, Nevada and Oregon.

The 118th Infantry Regiment from South Carolina Army National Guard, as well as the 285th Medical Company from the Ohio Army National Guard, have joined with the 116th CBCT.  They are all being deployed to relieve another 116th CBCT led unit which was deployed in November 2021.

It is all part of the ongoing Operation Spartan Shield. The U.S. Army side of Operation Spartan Shield is called Task Force Spartan, which is dependent upon part time Army National Guard and Army Reserve units.  Task Force Rattler will be the second, back to back, 12 months deployment for the 116th CBCT.

Before they actually deploy to The Middle East, units must spend 45 days on Fort Bliss, Texas, conducting final deployment training, despite having trained in their home states for as long as two years, and very likely having been deployed many times before.

This AH-64 Apache was being used by the evaluation team out of Joint Base Lewis-McChord, Washington. Idaho Air National Guard photo by Master Sergeant Becky Vanshur, 14SEP2022.

To make things more confusing, the U.S. Army evaluation team on Fort Bliss is not based in Texas.  The U.S. Army evaluators are from the 189th Infantry Brigade Combined Arms Training Battalion, normally based on Joint Base Lewis-McChord, Washington.

In August 2022, more than 6-hundred additional militia personnel deployed from Idaho.  The 116th Cavalry Brigade Combat Team’s Task Force Rattler spent the past two years preparing for the deployment to The Middle East (South West Asia), as part of the never ending Operation Spartan Shield.

The 116th Cavalry Brigade Combat Team also deployed to Iraq in 2004 and 2010This year, Idaho Army National Guard’s State Aviation Group C-12 Huron aircraft and crew deployed to Africa.  The Idaho Air National Guard’s 124th Fighter Wing has deployed many times as well.  In June of this year, the 124th Civil Engineer Squadron was deployed to Oklahoma, because of flooding.

F-15 50th Anniversary: Desert Storm First Blood for USAF, the never ending Tar Baby called Iraq!

The first combat use of the F-15 Eagle was by Israel in 1979, followed by Saudi Arabia in 1984.  First combat use of the F-15 by the U.S. Air Force was during Operation Desert Storm, in 1991.

Five months before Desert Storm, the build-up was called Desert Shield. These F-15C Eagles are patrolling the sky over Saudi Arabian oil operations. U.S. Air Force/33rd Tactical Fighter Wing photo.

The USAF info that came with this photo is highly dubious. 1st, it states the photo was made in May 1992, more than a year after Desert Storm, yet claims this F-15C is being prepped for a mission during Desert Storm. 2nd, as you will see in the photo below, this Gulf Spirit does not have the kill markings that were applied after Desert Storm. Possibly this photo was made during Desert Storm, but not released until May 1992? Photo by Senior Airman Chris Putnam.

After Desert Storm, France, the United States, and United Kingdom, imposed a ‘no fly zone’ over Iraq.  This Operation Southern Watch would last more than a decade, and help the U.S./NATO invade Iraq in 2003.  Even though the invasion was rationalized by the claim of weapons of mass destruction (WMD), which would later be proven false, the invasion of Iraq was dubbed Operation Iraqi Freedom (a major clue that it was not about WMDs). This was followed by Operation Inherent Resolve in 2014, supposedly to fight religious extremism that had taken over Iraq as a result of Operation Iraqi Freedom.  Even though Operation Inherent Resolve was declared a success in Iraq, in 2019, U.S./NATO forces continue to operate in Iraq.  This means the taxpayers of U.S./NATO have been funding direct military involvement in Iraqi affairs for more than three decades, and the result the leaders of the so called free world promised has yet to materialize.

For many decades after Desert Storm was declared finished, Eagles would continue to patrol over, and even bomb, Iraq. The relatively new F-15E Strike Eagle somewhere in Saudi Arabia, 20MAY1992. USAF photo.

U.S. Army blows-up British made Iranian Chieftain in Iraq!

U.S. Army photo by Private First Class Nikko-Angelo Matos, 28MAR2011.

In March 2011, the U.S. Army 25th Infantry Division’s B-Company 52nd Infantry Regiment used a NATO United Kingdom made FV4201 Chieftain tank as a TOW target, TOW as in Tube-launched, Optically-tracked, Wire-guided missile.

It happened on Kirkush Military Training Base, in Diyala Province, Iraq.

The Chieftain tank was made by NATO United Kingdom (U.K.), and purchased by Iran in the 1970s.  The Iranian army liked the Chieftain better than their U.S. made M60A1s, and paid in advance for hundreds more, but before that order was filled The 1979 Revolution happened and all sales of NATO made weapons to Iran were eventually banned by the United States/NATO, in fact, Iran paid in advance for at least 6-hundred Chieftains which The U.K. never delivered.  Not only did Iran want more Chieftains, they also paid for the development of an upgraded Chieftain called the Lion Project. In 2020, it was revealed that the British Royal Army used the money Iran spent on the never delivered 6-hundred tanks, as well as the money for the Lion Project, to develop their Challenger tank.

Iranian Chieftain sometime during The Iran-Iraq War, photo via Fars News Agency.

During the Iran-Iraq War 1980-88 (known in The Middle East as The First Gulf War), massive tank battles were fought, with both sides gaining and losing ground. Many ground vehicles were captured by Iran and Iraq, and put into use against their former owners.  The Iraqi army claims to have captured as many as 75 intact Iranian Chieftains during the Iran-Iraq War.

Photo via Mehr News Agency.

By 2013, Iran had gone ahead with their own attempt at the old Lion Project, and radically modified/enlarged the hull of their Chieftains, allowing them to use a larger engine and transmission, and stronger suspension. They call it The Mobarez.

In 2015, it was revealed that so-called pro-Iranian militias in Iraq were using Iraqi upgraded Chieftains, called The Khalid.  The upgrades included air conditioning as well as night vision.

U.S. Army video report, by Specialist Jesse Youngstrom, explaining why the 25th Infantry Division blew up the Chieftain:

The Chieftain was also used by Kuwait, and is still in use in Jordan, Oman, as well as Iran.

On 23FEB2022, U.S. taxpayer funded, Israeli designed, 120mm mortar illumination rounds were given to Peshmerga.  The U.S. Army switched to the Israeli designed rounds in the 1990s.  They were tested on U.S. Army bases in Arizona and Utah.  Illumination rounds typically contain minerals like phosphorus, which burn when exposed to air. All militaries around the world use such illumination rounds, as long as they are not intentionally used as ‘weapons’ they can avoid the international ban on phosphorus weapons.

What many people in the United States don’t know is that under President Barack Obama, Iraq was allowed to get weapons from countries considered ‘not friendly’ to the United States, like Iran and Russia.  In fact, Iranian Sukhoi 25 aircraft operated inside Iraq, from Iraqi air bases, to help Iraq fight the so-called Islamic State.  When Iran left they ‘gifted'(?) the Su-25s to Iraq.  These were in addition to the Russian Su-25s acquired by Iraq.  They are Su-25KM single seaters and Su-25UBKM two seaters.
