U.S. Job Losses & Store Closings, 22 – 23 October 2014: “…time for us to consider a fundamental change….there doesn’t appear to be an end in sight.” Martha Stewart NYC exodus bigger than 1st reported! More Sears & Kmart shutdowns!

Incomplete list of publicly announced layoffs & shutdowns:

Arizona:  Scrap book store Paper and Metal Scrappers shutdown.  It’s blamed on health problems.

Arkansas: The administrators of Fort Smith city are pissed off because the economy is not recovering for them, an undisclosed number of taxsucking city jobs will be eliminated: “It may be time for us to consider a fundamental change in our General Fund services and the number of employees. We have experienced this fiscal stress for at least 6 years, and there doesn’t appear to be an end in sight. The increasing frustration with the budget difficulties year after year may have to be solved by re-evaluating our ability to sustain current service and employment levels in the General Fund…..Over the last few days, we’ve had to reduce General Fund spending requests by $1.7 million to get to a 7.5% ending balance. And, those figures don’t account for any pay adjustments. If pay adjustments are included, the needed reductions become $2.6 million. We don’t have many vacant General Fund positions. The police dept. has frozen 8 patrol officer positions for the last 2 years, and will likely need to do so in 2015 in order to meet their budget targets.”-Ray Gosack, administrator

California: Sears Holdings announced the Rocklin Kmart will be shutdown, 63 jobs lost.  In Newbury Park, legal drugs pusher Amgen issued a WARN saying they will kill off 349 jobs just three days before Xmas! It’s all part of Amgen’s plans to kill off a total of 29-hundred jobs by the end of 2015!  Company administrators say things are so bad they might have to break the drug pushing operation up into smaller parts. In Redding, ‘couples’ media op XO Group issued a WARN saying they will shutdown in January 2015, at least 113 jobs lost!  In San Jose, Supertech-Microchip issued a WARN saying they will layoff 83 people just two days before Xmas! In Fallbrook, Obama Care forcing Fallbrook Home Health and Hospice to issue a WARN saying they will shutdown just three days before Xmas, 37 jobs lost.

Connecticut: Sears Holdings announced the Torrington Kmart will be shutdown, 73 jobs lost.

Florida:  In Miami, another iconic bar shutdown. After 101 years (surviving the Great Depression and numerous recessions) Tobacco Road Bar being shutdown by the greedy property owner, who refuses to renew the lease.

Michigan: Administrators at Spring Arbor University are blaming what I call DSS (Disappearing Student Syndrome) on their planned elimination of jobs.  As a private Christian college they are not required to reveal just how many Christians will become jobless.  In Grand Rapids, the Diplomat Pharmacy on Fulton Street shutdown.  Local news says company administrators refused to say why, but it sounds like the compounding pharmacy is consolidating ops.

Minnesota: Rochester Public Schools announced that 17 tech employees will become jobless by January 2015.  But here’s an odd thing, the school district also said there will be 19 new job openings in the same department!  The laid off employees are basically being forced to re-apply for employment, and if they get re-hired it’ll probably be for less pay.  That’s the wisdom of our education system.

Mississippi: The Department of Transportation announced they will render 44 Appraisals and Titles employees jobless by the end of January 2015.  MDoT administrators are blaming it on lack of work.

New York:  In Long Island, after ten years the Communitea coffee shop shutdown, the owners saying “We have been unable to renew the lease…”   Frank Adams Jewelers shutdown their profit making store in Saratoga Springs, saying the logistics of managing multiple stores was too difficult.  Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia finally revealed that 114 NYC jobs are being killed off.  Earlier media reports said it was at least 50 jobs, but Martha Stewart finally issued a WARN stating 114 people will become jobless in January 2015!  The Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center sold off its Chronic Dialysis Centers in Bay Shore and Lindenhurst, at least 102 jobs in limbo!  Sears Holdings announced the Massena Sears and Auto Center will be shutdown, at least 51 jobs lost.  Sears Holdings announced the Auburn Sears and Auto Center will be shutdown, at least 51 jobs lost.  In Pearl River, legal drugs pusher Pfizer issued a WARN saying at least 16 people will become unemployed by December, the company is trying to cut costs.

Ohio: Oberlin College told three HVAC engineers to take a big cut in pay and become janitors or become unemployed!  College administrators called it a “opportunity for voluntary layoff”.  It’s blamed on the the college’s switch from coal heating to natural gas.   Butler County eliminated 14 jobs by shutting down the Family Connections operation, as well as five other Children Services jobs.  County administrators are contracting out the jobs to save money as a result of the radical changes in Medicaid payments caused by Obama Care.

Oregon: Netflix announced they’re shutting down their Hillsboro DVD call center by June 2015, at least 188 jobs lost! Netflix says if their Oregon employees want to stay employed they must move to a call center in California or a live streaming center in Utah.

Pennsylvania: Administrators of Franconia revealed they’ve culled 10 jobs, including six cops.  One paranoid police sucking resident (Carrie Horchuck) told local news media “I pay taxes for a reason. I want to feel safe.”  Let’s just bring back the massive police state known as the Soviet Union, and ship all you paranoids to the glorious USSR so you can feel safe.  Read the Declaration of Independence, the U.S. was not created so you can feel “safe”!

Vermont: In Richmond, after 14 years the Bridge Street Cafe shutdown. The owner said “I’m an old man” and his even older mother wants to live in Florida.

Virginia: In Altavista, after only four years investment management company Intersections announced it is shutting down its call center in December, 77 jobs lost.  Administrators blame a “decline in revenue caused by changes to the regulatory environment and financial sector”.

The U.S. Department of Labor (DoL) doesn’t count the hundreds of layoffs involving less than 50 people each, in its mass layoff reports. It also doesn’t count all the little ‘mom & pop’ businesses that shutdown. It doesn’t count people who get a severance for being laid off.
