Labor Shortage: China turns to robots & drones to supply its military!

06 November 2022 (12:28-UTC-07 Tango 06) 15 Aban 1401/11 Rabi ‘ath-Thani 1444/13 Xin-Hai 4720/06 ноября 2022 года

Just a sampling of the robots the People’s Republic of China is making.

So-called Swarm UAV launcher. PLA photo published 04NOV2022.

In November 2022, China showed-off its new lightweight version of its vehicle mounted ‘Swarm’ R/C drones (UAV, Unmanned Aerial Vehicles) launcher.  It is considered a weapon system, but can used for reconnaissance missions and communication relay.

One of the so-called Rainbow drones.

Also, a family of autonomous A-I UAVs, called Rainbow, was displayed.  Their capabilities and configurations are designated by a number system.  They can be either fixed wing or rotary wing.  There are dozens of versions; long range, high altitude, high speed, heavy lift, naval versions, and stealth versions.  The first Rainbow, CH-1, apparently flew in 2000.  Several countries use a version of the Rainbow, including countries that are supposed to be allies of the United States.

In October, military units, local government agencies, and civilian (silly-vilian) contractors, took part in exercise Central Shandong Support-2022, in Zibo, Shandong Province.

Photo by Chen Maoxin, published 17OCT2022.

The exercise included the use of robots and UAVs to delivery anything from food to ammunition.  One exercise involved delivering ‘non-staple’ food-stuffs to 5-thousand military personnel for seven days.  At the same time, those robots and UAVs had to be protected from air attack: “This exercise serves to explore the ways of economic mobilization under the new situation, and has tested the capability of the professional support teams for national defense mobilization in Zibo City.”-Wang Peiquan, commander of the Zibo Military Sub-command

Another exercise involved using A-I driven fire-fighting robots to respond to an enemy air attack on a civilian building.

Also in October 2022, China’s  Sichuan Tengden Sci-Tech Innovation (aka Tengden) unveiled a four engined UAV transport aircraft called Scorpion D.  It is based on earlier two engined transport drones.  They claim it can carry a maximum of 1.5-metric tons.

In September 2022, a team from the National University of Defense Technology (NUDT) of the Chinese People’s Liberation Army (PLA) took top prize at the Unmanned Ground Vehicles Competition, in Cairo, Egypt.  The international contest is sponsored by the Egyptian Ministry of Defense.  The winning robot is called Kylin Fighter, it can be remote controlled or operate independently.  The PLA’s NUDT has been taking part in Egypt’s robot games since 2016, and has won four events.

TP500

In June 2022, China’s AVIC First Aircraft Institute unveiled its UAV transport aircraft, known as TP500.  Its first flight was 27 minutes long.  They claim it can carry a 500-kilogram load as far as 500-kilometers.  The designers say it can travel as far as 1800-Km, or carry heavier loads.

PLA video report, from 12APR2022, showing a UAV medical transporter, a robot loader and a robot pickup truck used to supply ammo, and other robot/A-I things for logistical supply:

In October 2018, China turned the old Antonov 2 biplane into the world’s largest UAV cargo-plane. They call it the FH-98.

China’s Type 59 (aka WZ-120) is a license built version of the Soviet T-54A.  Many were sold/given to Viet Nam during the U.S. occupation of that South East Asian country, it was the first time the Type 59 experienced actual combat.   In the last decade of the non-official Cold War (the 1980s) China upgraded its tanks with NATO’s 105mm L7 gun, designed in United Kingdom.

The latest version of the Type 59 is the Type 59D (WZ-120D) with explosive reactive armor and a longer barreled 105mm L7 main gun (which is now called the ZPL-94/Type 94 gun).  Apparently it is able to launch anti-tank guided missiles from the ZPL-94 gun.

In March 2018, the PLA announced that many of the retiring Type 59 tanks are being converted to be used as remote control tanks, or even robot tanks: “A large number of due-to-retire Type 59 tanks can be converted into unmanned vehicles if equipped with artificial intelligence.”-Liu Qingshan, chief editor of Tank and Armoured Vehicle

Terminator 2021: U.S. Army’s new ‘Ripsaw’ Robot Combat Tank

“These prototypes have been purposely built utilizing what we have learned to date with RCVs and to give us an opportunity to further drive the RCV Campaign of Learning. The prototypes will be used by soldiers in operational experiments to develop the tactics, techniques and procedures (TTP) that our Brigade Combat Teams will utilize to bring new levels of lethality to our forces through the combining of Manned and Un-Manned Teams (MUM-T).”-Major General Ross Coffman, Next Generation Combat Vehicles Cross-Functional Team

At the end of May 2021, the U.S. Army had five new Robotic Combat Vehicle (RCV) prototypes to play with.  Two types of robot tanks are being tested, RCV-Light and RCV-Medium.  The goal is to have RCVs ready for the 2022 Phase Two Soldier Operational Experiment (SOE, to be held on Fort Hood, Texas).

By the end of June 2021, the RCV-M (nicknamed Ripsaw M5 by its developers, not to be confused with earlier Ripsaw robots) tank began live-fire testing on Fort Dix (Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst), New Jersey.

The RCV-M has the usual for a robot M240 machine gun, and for the first time a XM813 main gun: “This is the first system that we’ve developed where we have a gun of this caliber mounted on the robot, a completely unmanned robot, and that is also controlled from a different location or within the manned combat vehicle, it’s certainly unique.”-Cristian Bara, Ground Vehicle Systems Center

Russian Android teaches self to shoot guns!

“FEDOR demonstrated his abilities to shoot from both hands……to set priorities instantly and make decisions.”-Dmitry Rogozin, Deputy Prime Minister of Russia

The humanoid Final Experimental Demonstration Object Research robot has been learning a lot, the latest thing is how to use a pistol, with both hands at the same time.

In the video FEDOR gunslinger is at the end, after the robot tanks:

https://youtu.be/EJn9UgADcPY

Reminds me of the MGM movie Westworld.

So far it can open doors, turn on lights and drive cars.  Eventually FEDOR will be used to pilot Russian space flights by 2021.

It’s being developed by Android Technics and Russia’s Emergencies’ Ministry Advanced Research Fund.

Self Drive Car Fail! Human drivers unable to regain control from robot driver?

12 December 2016 / 20:17 UTC-07 Tango 06 (23 Azar 1395/13 Rabi ‘al-Awwal 1438/15 Geng Zi 4714)

“If someone is designing a method for automated vehicle handover, there will need to be detailed research on that specific method. This study is tip of an iceberg.”-Lene Harbott, Revs Program at Stanford

A new study published by the new Science Robotics journal says self driving cars don’t like being turned off!

The article titled Motor learning affects car-to-driver handover in automated vehicles, presented the results of the Dynamic Design Lab study at California’s Stanford University.  The study showed that differences between human’s explicit and implicit thinking actually made it difficult to take control of a car that has been under total computer control: “…there is this physical change and we need to acknowledge that people’s performance might not be at its peak if they haven’t actively been participating in the driving.”-Holly Russell, Dynamic Design Lab
