This is why people in the United States refer to the rear storage area of a car as a ‘trunk’.  In the early days you could buy a rack to mount your ‘steamer trunk’ (used mainly on steam-trains or ocean going steam-liners) on the back of your automobile, hence the trunk.

On 21OCT2023, a big pre-Halloween car show/USMC Reserve’s Toys-4-Tots drive/Trunk or Treat was held in the Old Town area of Pocatello, Idaho.

Before the invention of off-road four-wheel-drives, and when most roads were not paved, people used these two-wheel-drives ‘off-road’ almost daily.
