The ‘pland-emic’ paranoia has had unexpected negative effect; the number of licensed foster care families in Nevada has been cut in half! Now the desperate state of Nevada has turned to its National Guard personnel to deal with a growing problem of lack of foster care parents: “Children in foster care need strong and supportive caregivers who are willing to work with biological families and the Department of Family Services to reunite children with their families. Historically, military families and individuals have proven to be the type of special people who provide loving and stable homes to support children.”-Allyson Manumaleuna, Foster Care Recruitment and Training for Clark County Department of Family Services

If you live in the Washington DC area get ready for Hurricane Citadel Gale, the U.S. Navy (USN) says it is going to make landfall between April 24th and May 5th!

Don’t worry, it’s part of the USN’s yearly Tropical Cyclone Condition of Readiness (TCCOR) preparations, it is actually called Hurricane Exercise/Citadel Gale 2023 (HURREX/CG).

It’s also important to prepare the Navy Family and Accountability System (NFAAS): “NFAAS is an essential resource for locating Navy personnel and family members during crisis or natural disasters to ensure they’re safe. And the resources available to our Navy families to help them be prepare for a disaster can literally save their lives in a disaster.”– Captain Derrick Kingsley, Naval Air Station Patuxent River

Also on 01JUN2022, U.S. Coast Guard District 8 issued a video reviewing the past few years of hurricane action for the Gulf states, including off-season action (incorrectly referred to as “inactive season”, because if there are still hurricanes then it is not “inactive”) and tropical storms:

Duck, North Carolina, where a major weather research project has been ongoing since 2019.

It has been more than 130 years since modern weather science started, yet even after decades of collecting hurricane data within the United States, scientists still don’t understand the weather!

An ancient U.S. Army Corps of Engineers LARC-V is used to carry a remote control boat (oceanographic research drone) for the DuNEx.

An attempt to rectify that will officially begin in Autumn 2021, on the Outer Banks of North Carolina. It is called the During Nearshore Event Experiment (DuNEx), or DUring Nearshore Event eXperiment (DUNEX), being conducted by the U.S. Coastal Research Program.  It would’ve happened sooner but there was a “…delay in their planning and preparation for the upcoming… …DUNEX field experiment due to the COVID-19 pandemic.”

U.S. Army Corps of Engineers photo.

Preparations for DuNEx 2021 have been ongoing since 2019, and the whole thing is not expected to conclude until Winter 2022!  The goal is to be better able to predict what a storm will do, and to advise coastal communities on short-term and long-term plans of action.
