Incomplete list of announced closings and layoffs:
Alaska: In Kodiak, a Blockbuster video rental store closed down. It’s part of plans to shut down all U.S. Blockbuster stores.
California: In Santa Rosa, optical communications company JDSU Uniphase laid off 126 employees!
Colorado: In Colorado Springs, the Christian God doesn’t feel like stopping the layoffs of 69 of ‘His/Hers’ employees! Focus on the Family ministry laying off 40 people, and NavPress (publishing arm of The Navigators ministry) laid off 29 people. Both ministries said more layoffs could be in the works as their revenues are crashing.
Florida: PSS World Medical laid off 124 people! It’s blamed on a merger with McKesson Group.
Georgia: Savannah River Remediation laid off 465 people! The operation manages the U.S. Department of Energy’s radioactive waste site as well as the Defense Waste Processing Facility. The layoffs are blamed on federal funding cuts.
Indiana: Indiana University Health eliminating 800 positions through layoffs and forced early retirement! This is on top of jobs cuts made last school year. It’s partly blamed on “declining reimbursement rates” caused by Obama Care (ACA).
Kansas: In Wichita, Spirit AeroSystems laying off additional 150 people! The company laid off 350 people back in July! They are also asking employees to retire early. This is strange because local news reports say the company is advertising for hundreds of available positions due to “record demand”. The company builds major sub-assemblies for aircraft industry giants like Boeing.
Maryland: In Canton, the Bay Cafe being sold off. The longtime owner hasn’t been able to pay his rent or taxes, he says there is no way the economy has recovered: “Business has been horrible!”-David Naumann
Missouri: The Normandy School District warning of layoffs, and even shut down? The school district lost its accreditation, and so far 449 students have transferred to other school districts. Those districts are now billing Normandy at least $424-thousand USD for the transfers, which could be the nail in the coffin for Normandy.
New Jersey: Community Medical Center warns of another major round of layoffs. Hospital officials partly blame Obama Care for “rapidly shifting” the business environment.
New Mexico: The Christian God won’t stop Obama Care from killing 44 jobs at the Taos Health Systems’ Holy Cross Hospital: “Given the changes in reimbursement and our losses of the last few years this becomes a bit tenuous.”-Peter Hofstetter, CEO.
New York: In Syracuse, France based (U.S. HQ in Texas) GDF SUEZ Energy North America ended operations, 24 people unemployed.
Oklahoma: Natural gas giant, Chesapeake Energy, laying off 2-thousand people! Company officials say they have to “reorganize”.
Washington: In Redmond, Pacific Music store closed down, for good? The store was forced to move from a better location, because city officials wanted the property for condos! Store owners say being forced to move to a lesser location along with the bad economy did them in. In Liberty Lake, utility meter maker Itron laying off 750 people! This despite the fact that Itron won a contract to supply India with hundreds of thousands of utility meters.
The U.S. Department of Labor (DoL) doesn’t count the hundreds of layoffs involving less than 50 people each, in its mass layoff reports. It also doesn’t count all the little ‘mom & pop’ businesses that shut down.
“Our ideals and principles, as well as our national security……..That’s what makes America different. That’s what makes us exceptional.”-Barack Obama, 10 September 2013
