Idaho trades one Cold-War aircraft for another Cold-War aircraft, is it progress or politics?

Both the A-10 Thunderbolt-2 and the F-16 Falcon were developed during the same decade; the 1970s.

In July of this year, the Idaho Air National Guard revealed that the U.S. Air Force is forcing them to replace their A-10Cs with F-16s, starting in 2027.

A-10C on Gowen Field, Boise Airport, Idaho, 20DEC2023. Idaho Air National Guard photo by Master Sergeant Becky Vanshur.

The A-10A (first flight May 1972) was the result of U.S. Air Force experience with ground attack missions over Viet Nam.

An F-16A belonging to Hill AFB, Utah, flies over Nellis AFB, Nevada, December 1979. USAF photo by Ken Hackman.

The F-16A (first flight in 1976) was developed as a replacement for the F-5E Tiger-2 (itself a replacement for the F-5A Freedom Fighter, designed to be a low cost aircraft for countries who did not have the money to buy the big combat planes, and was subsidized by U.S. taxpayers through the MAP [Military Assistance Program]).

The first USAF unit deployment of F-16s to Europe involved Falcons from Hill Air Force Base, Utah, in 1981. They were sent to Flesland Air Station, in NATO-Norway. U.S. Air Force photo by Master Sergeant Don Sutherland, 01MAR1981.

The division between those in the USAF who liked the A-10 and those who liked the F-16 began during the development of the prototypes, in the 1970s. My father worked at Edwards Air Force Base, California, during that time, and was one of the pro-F-16’ers.  Edwards AFB is where both aircraft were originally developed. My father would come home from work stating that he hoped something bad happened to the A-10, so that the USAF would choose the F-16.  What people (including my father) didn’t seem to understand is that both aircraft were the result of combat experiences over Viet Nam, and were intentionally designed for specific missions, which is why at that time the USAF wanted both aircraft.

A-10C on Gowen Field, Boise Airport, Idaho, 20DEC2023. Idaho Air National Guard photo by Master Sergeant Becky Vanshur.

Both aircraft have been upgraded over the decades, yet ever since the Obama regime was in power the U.S. Air Force has pushed to replace the decades old A-10 with the decades old F-16.

Drugs, the American Way: Is Mexico & China waging a Fentanyl war against the United States?

Incomplete (tip-o-the iceberg, seriously this isn’t the half-of-it!) list of links to United States (U.S.) drug related crimes and oddities for the month of January 2023:

U.S. Coast Guard District 7 PADET photo, 16JAN2023.

On 16JAN2023, the U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) transferred approximately 250 kilograms of cocaine, and three smugglers, to Dominican Republic.  They were captured in the Mona Passage on 10JAN2023.

On 30JAN2023, USCG Cutter Emlen Tunnell (WPC 1145) captured 4-thousand kilograms of hashish and 512 kilograms of methamphetamine, in the Gulf of Oman. This was the first drug seizure in 2023 for Combined Task Force (CTF)-150: “This is just the beginning of our work in delivering maritime security operations in the region to stop illicit activities and drug smuggling. This comes as a result of a valued partnership between CTF 150 and all partner nations in Combined Maritime Forces.”-Captain James Byron, United Kingdom Royal Navy, current leader of CMF-150 (so, even the U.S. led anti-smuggling operations in the Gulf of Oman are commanded by Red Coats!)

Also on 30JAN2023U.S. Army Intelligence Center of Excellence gave a short history of the U.S. Tactical Analysis Teams (TATs) deployed to Central and South America, in the name of taking the Reagan era War on Drugs international.  The first TAT was formed and deployed in 1989.  Obviously, to me, it has been a resounding failure, but don’t tell that to the taxpayer funded U.S. Army Intelligence Center of Excellence, or U.S. Southern Command (SouthCom).

The Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) reported capturing more than 379 million potentially deadly doses of fentanyl in 2022, enough to kill every American! Most of the fentanyl is smuggled by Mexican drug gangs, and is being mass-produced at secret factories in Mexico with chemicals sourced largely from China!

World War 3: NATO ‘pallet’ launches J-A-S-S-M, for first time!

“The future is going to be different than what we have experienced for the last 20 years….”-Lieutenant General Jim Slife, U.S. Air Force Special Operations Command, during the most recent iteration of ATREUS

Oklahoma Air National Guard photo by Technical Sergeant Brigette Waltermire, 09NOV2022.

On 09NOV2022, U.S. Special Operations Command Europe conducted the first-ever demonstration of the ‘palletized’ launching system of the AGM-158 Joint Air-to-Surface Standoff Missile (JASSM) ‘bunker buster’ in NATO Europe (specifically NATO Norway).

Palletized JASSM being loaded onto a NATO Poland C-130 Hercules, in Powidz, Poland. U.S. Air Force photo by Staff Sergeant Brandon Julson, 08NOV2022.

This is part of the U.S. European Command’s Operational Series ATREUS: “This effort is meant to increase integration of both conventional and Special Operations Forces from participating nations and enhance interoperability with our NATO allies and European partners. ….ATREUS training events enable effective responses for any contingency, as well as continuation of training, and increased readiness and collective defense.”-Lieutenant Colonel Lawrence Melnicoff, Operation ATREUS ‘lead’

Even though the U.S. military spells ATREUS in all caps, it is not an acronym, it is the ancient Greek god of war.  It is silly that Lieutenant Colonel Lawrence Melnicoff stated that Operation ATREUS was “routine engagements”, as the first ATREUS exercise began in April 2021.  However, there have already been seven ATREUS ‘iterations’ in NATO Europe since then!  And apparently, ATREUS is meant to be a global operation: “Participation from our allies is the cornerstone of ATREUS iterations. Poland, Romania, and the United Kingdom have been regular participants in the most recent ATREUS iterations throughout 2021 and 2022, but the global effort with our fellow geographic combatant commands makes this a historic demonstration of allied solidarity worldwide.”-Lieutenant Colonel Lawrence Melnicoff, Operation ATREUS ‘lead’

Palletized JASSM being loaded onto a NATO Poland C-130 Hercules, in Powidz, Poland. USAF photo by Staff Sergeant Brandon Julson, 08NOV2022.

During the most recent iteration of ATREUS, the U.S. Air Force’s (USAF) 67th Special Operations Squadron, 352d Special Operations Wing, demonstrated the Rapid Dragon Palletized Effects System (RDPES), using the latest JASSM cruise missile.  The RDPES is an experimental system that allows special operations cargo planes, like the MC-130J Commando-2 (a combat variant of the Super Hercules), to carry and launch cruise missiles.  The USAF is already using the system inside The Arctic Circle, and now in NATO Europe.

The JASSM has been in use, by the U.S., since 2009.  Australia, Finland, and Poland, began stockpiling them in 2014 (same year as the NATO backed coup in Ukraine).  In April 2018, two USAF B-1B Lancer bombers launched 19 JASSMs against Syria’s military.

Back in 2010, National Guard units began preparing for Homeland Response Force (HRF) operations in conjunction with the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).  By 2012, ten National Guard led HRF units, consisting of between 5-hundred and 6-hundred personnel each, and coordinating with FEMA’s ten Regions of operations, had been established.

On 10MAY2022, the Utah National Guard unveiled their new FEMA Region 8 Collapsed Structure Venue, located on Camp Williams.  It will be used by both military and civilian emergency response units for ‘all hazards’ training.
