‘Great Power Competition’: Mountain West Militia’s code phrase for 3rd World War!

In June 2017U.S. General Robert B. Abrams used the phrase ‘near peer threats’, a euphemism for China and Russia.

Image from a video by Technical Sergeant Danny Whitlock, 03FEB2024.

Now, at the beginning of February 2024, the commander of the Utah Air and Army National Guard used a new phrase (code words?) for World War Three; the ‘great power competition’: “As we engage in great power competition, it is crucial that we innovate and optimize our force. We must adapt and change how we train and fight; conflict against China will be very different from any battle we’ve ever had. We must aggressively push new and sometimes uncomfortable tactics to win. This exercise lets the warfighters push their limits to create and perfect capabilities they need to deter and defeat our adversaries.”-Major General Daniel Boyack, Adjutant General of the Utah National Guard

From March 13th through 17th, 2023, FEMA Region 10 underwent a mass aero-medical evacuation, affecting the states of Alaska, Idaho, Oregon and Washington!

The U.S. Transportation Command (TransCom) coordinated the medevac.  More than 4-hundred military (Regular [Active Duty], Reserve and National Guard) and civilian personnel from across the U.S. were involved, including personnel from the the Department of Veterans Affairs, the Department of Health and Human Services, and the Defense Health Agency.

Most of the medevac took place on McChord Field in Washington, but also included Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson, Alaska; Gowen Field (Boise Airport), Idaho; and Portland Air National Guard Base (Portland Airport), Oregon.

Fortunately it was all a massive training event: “It allows in a controlled environment to surge the system, identify what needs to be improved, then to act on those areas to train to the highest standards.”-Major Donna Olson, 446th Aeromedical Evacuation Squadron

“You want to make the training as realistic as possible with some stressors you would find out in the real world. Making sure the players aren’t completely stressed out, but proper learning is done.”– Master Sergeant Robert McNeal, North Carolina Air National Guard

“It’s important to do exercises like this to give people a sense of what happens in real world situations. The more you do it the less you have to think about it when it actually happens.”-Technical Sergeant Shannon Glover, 446th Operations Support Squadron

Residents of Kentucky reporting that this year’s flooding is the worst they’ve seen, with the Governor saying the death toll will hit double digits.  State officials declared it to be catastrophic, and admitting they don’t have the labor to adequately respond to calls for rescues.  Next door neighbor West Virginia is sending help.

The West Virginia National Guard is sending two UH-60M Blackhawks and two UH-72 Lakota rotary wing aircraft, and their crew.  They are rom Company C, 2-104th General Support Aviation Battalion (MEDEVAC) and Company B, 1-224th Security and Support Aviation Battalion, based out of Williamstown.
