The 116th Cavalry Brigade Combat Team (aka Snake River Brigade, one of my military alma maters) is Idaho’s largest Army National Guard unit. The brigade is located in more than 20 Idaho communities as well as units in Montana, Nevada and Oregon. The 2-116th Cavalry Regiment is headquartered in Caldwell with units in Emmett and Nampa.

In February 2023, the 2-116th Cavalry Regiment took part in what is called Dragon Defender 2023, on Camp Buehring in Kuwait. It wasn’t just the Idaho Army National Guard, the 272nd Chemical Company-79th Troop Command of the Massachusetts Army National Guard was also present: “I love CBRN [Chemical Biological Radioactive Nuclear]. I love that it’s not just one thing; there are so many aspects to it. It’s not just putting on your gas mask and going to a CS [Crowd Suppression gas, aka tear gas] chamber or checking your mask.”-Warrant Officer Kelly Osmon, Massachusetts Army National Guard

Dragon Defender included Weapons of Mass Destruction (WMD) training, specifically involving mounted reconnaissance, extraction and decontamination of victims. WMD also includes explosives, and the Arizona Army National Guard was there to cover that aspect: “Being EOD [Explosive Ordinance Disposal], our job is to clear the scene of any explosive hazards. A lot of scenarios with CBRN weapons there will be booby traps or dispersal devices with explosives in them. The U.S. Army’s Defense Threat Reduction Agency has revealed that from October 18th through the 22nd, Republic of Korea (RoK, South Korea) anti-nuclear combat team conducted training on the U.S. Navy owned Idaho National Laboratory (INL).

It’s called the Nuclear Infrastructure, Assessment and Characterization Course, and is taught mainly on the INL’s Idaho Falls campus. This is, according to the U.S. Army, part of twice a year training of anti-nuclear units, this being the seventh time since 2018.

U.S. units are called Nuclear Disablement Teams (NDT), the RoK units are called Nuclear Characterization Teams (NCT), they have slightly different missions.

The U.S. NDT focus on finding and disabling nuclear facilities/weapons, while the RoK NCT include other CBRN (Chemical, Biological, Radiological, Nuclear) operations.

Next time you go shopping wear your CBRN gloves, new studies are warning that those cash register receipts are laced with hormone interfering chemicals.

The Ecology Network claims that 93% of cash register receipts tested positive for chemicals known as BPA (bisphenol A) and BPS (bisphenol S). The State University of New York and the Chinese Academy of Sciences found that almost 90% of human exposure to BPS is from cash register receipts. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) banned BPAs from use in plastic baby bottles. Manufacturers switched to BPS, but it turns out that chemical could be just as bad as BPA.

Most cash registers today do not use ink, but instead use heat reactive chemicals like BPA and BPS. Scientific American says estrogen mimickers BPA and BPS can be blamed for diabetes, asthma and cancer.
