U.S. Job Losses & Store Closings 25 – 26 April 2014: “We can’t go any further!” No more 131 years old Ladies’ Home Journal! ObamaCare killing more healthcare & education jobs!

Incomplete list of publicly announced layoffs & shutdowns.

U.S. based OfficeMax/Office Depot shutting down 19 Canadian OfficeMax Grand & Toy stores, at least 160 jobs lost!  One store in Toronto is 132 years old!  OfficeMax took over the Canadian company in 1996, then recently was taken over by Office Depot.  More store closures across Canada and United States are expected to come from the Office Depot/OfficeMax deal.

California: Since last year Alta Bates Summit Medical Center has killed hundreds of jobs in the Golden State, now it’s been revealed  that Obama Care is forcing them to kill off another 358 healthcare jobs in Berkeley and Oakland!  Becker’s Hospital Review ranks Alta Bates in 4th place on their top ten list of healthcare job killing hospital systems.  Sunnyvale based ClearEdge Power now bankrupt busted and will kill at least 39% of its jobs across the United States!

Colorado: In Delta, Dean Foods shutting down their Meadow Gold Milk plant, 38 jobs lost.  It’s blamed on the lost of a major grocery store customer.

Connecticut:  California based ClearEdge Power now bankrupt busted and shutting down their South Windsor operation, 280 jobs lost!  This is after Connecticut officials gave the company $1.4-million USD in taxpayer help!

Illinois: Obama Care forces Social Security disability insurance and Medicare Secondary Payer Compliance processor Allsup to kill 90 jobs.   Kraft Foods announced they are killing 285 jobs!  Most of those jobs will be in-house trucking jobs, which will now be contracted out.

Indiana: What automotive industry recovery? In Kokomo, General Motors (GM) revealed they laid off an undisclosed number of employees at their computer control module factory.

Iowa:  In Beardstown, after more than 30 years IGA (Independent Grocers Alliance) hometown grocery store shutdown, 27 jobs lost: “You know Walmart came to Beardstown about five years ago and the business climate, at least for us, has declined because of that big box store. It’s just deteriorated to the point that it’s not profitable to keep the store open.”-Steve Kremer, owner

Massachusetts: What housing market recovery?  Too Big to Jail mortgage/finance holding company State Street killing 400 U.S. jobs this year (145 just in the Bay State) despite $2.5-billion in revenues!   Despite the billions in revenues investors are not happy and said it wasn’t enough!  State Street laid off 700 Bay Staters last year!

Mississippi:  Chapter 11 bankrupt busted Senderson Plumbing Products laid off 100 employees!  The company is also on the auction block, threatening the remaining 130 employees!

New York:  After 131 years popular magazine Ladies’ Home Journal has been killed off by its Iowa based publisher Meredith Corporation! All editorial staff now unemployed, the final issue is the July issue.  After ten years the Beast Bar shutdown.

North Carolina:  In Gaston, after 42 years Mr. T’s Place restaurant shutting down in May.  The owners are demanding to know when the economic recovery is going to take place!   In Hendersonville, after 18 years Cypress Cellar restaurant shutdown.  The owner said it’s no longer worth the amount of time she puts into the business.

Pennsylvania:  In Hazel Township, after more than 20 years JCPenney shut down.  In Ambler, God refuses to stop the First Presbyterian Church from shutting down their 47 years old Weekday Nursery School (maybe God took them all to Heaven?).  It’s blamed on disappearing students.  Philadelphia School District warned of 1-thousand layoffs in September!  It’s blamed on massive funding cuts and massive insurance cost increases caused by Obama Care.  District officials said the combination causes them to be short $440-million for 2014-15 school year!  They are begging city, county and state officials to raise taxes in order to fund the district’s budget shortfall: “We cannot have another year where we’re cutting. We have to get stable…so we can fight for the future instead of worrying about every single year….We can’t go any further! We’ll be in the mud at the bottom of the hill, and it’s a very steep hill!”-Bill Green, School Reform Commission Chairman

Texas:  The El Paso Independent School District warned it could be killing 172 teaching positions!   It’s blamed on rising insurance costs caused by Obama Care, and the disappearance of 3300 students over the past four years!

Vermont: The Vermont Technical College eliminating six positions due to increased employee insurance costs caused by Obama Care, and three years of disappearing students.

Wisconsin: Rich man’s boat builder Marquis and Carver Yachts killing 53 jobs.  CEO Rob Parmentier says  production is being consolidated due to crappy sales blamed on Old Man Winter, saying it was the “worst winter in North America in 100 years.”  However, it could also be because the company has taken over production of rich man’s VanDutch Marine yachts.

23 – 24 April 2014: “It’s the end of an iconic American brand!”

The U.S. Department of Labor (DoL) doesn’t count the hundreds of layoffs involving less than 50 people each, in its mass layoff reports. It also doesn’t count all the little ‘mom & pop’ businesses that shut down.
